Playing with firmwares on diffrent devices

I will never forgot my first try to mess with an original firmware in order to get more functions. It was a while ago, the summer of 2007 actually when the iphone 1st gen was released. The device was quiet good without messing it with actually, but by the time being it was locked to work exclusively on AT&T only. I did not have one, until I’ve got the news from hackint0sh.org forums that it was possible to get iPhone working on T-Mobile. Then I”ve get to the AT&T store asap and bought one. Just two hours later I did have an iPhone which was working on T-Mobile.

The process itself involved two very major points:
1) Jailbreaking the device. The term jailbreak related to iPhone spheres means that you are getting full access to the device operating system, such as listing processes, messing with drivers(kexts), running scripts and so on.
2) Unlocking the phone. The process with which you trick your phone to work with carriers different than AT&T. Once you pass the first step, you can use any kind of commands and tools(even 3rd party apps) in order to get that point. The beauty of iPhone is that actually under the shiny interface, you’ve a fully working BSD system.
In these days if you would like to get more familiar with iPhone jailing/unlocking I would suggest to use only this source: http://blog.iphone-dev.org . Thouse guys are involved in the iPhone scene from the very beginning. They tools are always free of charge and working great, so don’t be blinded by flashy sites that request money from you.

Ever since that day I’m always looking to mess with my own hardware in order to get extended functionality. The story did repeat with my Canon A Series PowerShot camera for which my goal was to get the camera to shoot RAW pictures. This was easy accomplished by custom canon firmware named CHDK. The RAW fuction is just small part of it. For full list of features and options you can read more on their wiki site.

Next were mine Xbox360 game console and my Portable Sony Playstation. Here I was looking for a way to play already backedup games. For thouse two game consoles I highly recommend thouse two sources and bulletin boards: http://xbox-scene.org and http://psp-hacks.com

After the consoles next in the list was my car navigation, I needed a new software with more accurate maps. Thankfully I’ve found www.gpspassion.com which were already done everything that you can think of. Things like watching movies/listening mp3/attaching rear camera/speed alerts/traffic conditions are just 30-90minutes reading away from your device.

Last month I was reading all about the jail processes for the PlayStation 3, because it was the only game platform which was not hackable, but not anymore. I really wanted to try that hack, but I did not want to spend money on second game console. So I did fire some phones and find out that friend of mine will be very happy to hack his PS3. Right now the borough PS3 console is sitting right next to me, waiting for it’s hack.

It’s kind a strange that I’m more enthusiastic about the jail/hack itself rather then the benefits that this jail will give me. I cannot catch myself in front of the TV or PC to playing games for more then 1hour.
Once the firmware is jailed//changed I’m the happiest person on the earth. I think the reason for that is I feel great when I change or broke some big corporation initial plans.

I’m going to leave you guys, just because very soon I will feel that feeling once more with that PS3 console.
Thanks for reading,
Cheers
